20-Second Handwashing Songs for Seniors

COVID-19 is on the rise, and we need all the help we can get to make sure that coronavirus doesn’t spread.

The CDC recommends at least 20 seconds of vigorous handwashing with soap and warm water to prevent the spread of germs.  Why not make it fun?

Here are 10 choruses from 1940-1970 to help you keep your hands squeaky clean. These examples are around 20 seconds, so no counting necessary! We’ve also changed a few lyrics so that they are “virus” compliant.

Show that virus who’s boss, kick it to the curb, and sing the blues away while you wash your hands.

Don’t Fence Me In – Cole Porter (1934)

Oh give me health lots of health under starry skies above

Don’t fence me in

Let me ride through the wide open country that I love

Don’t fence me in

Let me be myself in the evening breeze

Listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees

Send me off forever, but I ask you please

Don’t fence me in!

Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree – The Andrews Sisters (1942)

Don’t sit under the apple tree, with anybody else but me

Anybody else but me

Anybody else but me

No, no, no!

Don’t sit under the apple tree,

With anybody else but me

Til we are well again

Fly Me to the Moon – Frank Sinatra (1944)

In other words, don’t hold my hand

In other words, don’t you kiss me

Accentuate the Positive – Johnny Mercer (1944)

You’ve got to accentuate the positive

Eliminate the negative

Latch on to the affirmative

Don’t mess with Mr. In between

You’ve got to spread joy up to the maximum

Bring gloom down to the minimum

Have faith or pandemoniums

Liable to walk upon the scene

I’m gonna wash those germs right off of my hands

And send them on their way!

Hit the road germs, and don’t you come back no more, no more, no more, no more

Hit the road germs, and don’t you come back no more
