Description

Learn the basics of starting and growing a private practice in music therapy with this course. First, identify your ideal client and learn how to do market research on how best to reach that client. Then, learn powerful sales and marketing techniques so that you can share your services with your ideal client and invite them to become customers. Finally, learn how to build systems in your business to help everything run smoothly and efficiently. Throughout the course, discuss your own business development efforts with the instructors and other group participants

Board Certification Domains

  1. Participants will identify three ways to learn more about their ideal client. (CBMT Domains I.A.1, 4; IV.A.2, 3, 4; IV.B.4)
  2. Participants will describe three marketing techniques to use in their private practice. (CBMT Domains IV.B.5, 6, 8, 20)
  3. Participants will describe a four-part consultation (sales) model for their private practice. (CBMT I.A.1, 4; I.D.2c, 4, 5; III.B.10; IV.B.4, 5, 7)
  4. Participants will identify four business systems to implement within their private practice. (CBMT Domains IV.B.15, 16, 17, 18, 19)

Prerequisites: Participants need a computer or other device with a broadband internet connection. A Facebook profile is recommended but not required. The course forum is held in a Facebook group. Participants may submit insights via email in lieu of the Facebook forum. 

Instructors

Rachelle Morgan, MA, MT-BC is the founder of Soundscaping Source, where her mission is to bring meaningful music experiences to older adults and their caregivers, all the way to the end of life. Rachelle has been in clinical practice as a music therapist since 2004, and she maintains a private practice in Kansas City, where her team serves older adults in senior living and hospice. Rachelle is on the faculty of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and is in demand as a speaker, consultant, and staff trainer on topics related to music and eldercare. She is passionate about empowering music therapists in their work with older adults and as business owners. 

Mary Altom, MT-BC has built a thriving business to consumer music therapy practice from the ground up. Starting as a solo practitioner in 2011 and growing to a team of six at two locations, we have served hundreds of families directly through private pay, grants, and insurance reimbursement. Mary has served on the board of the Southwestern Region of AMTA and on the Texas state task force for music therapy recognition. She is passionate about empowering other music therapists to dream big in their practice so that more families can access services and benefit from music therapy.
