Alzheimer’s Association Jam Session

By Anastasia Wheeler, MT-BC

This last month I had the opportunity to stop by the Alzheimer’s Association Jam Session, and I am TOTALLY going again.

I arrived with my fiddle and mandolin in hand and met a group of fantastic, joyful, and talented musicians who welcomed me into their group.

These folks lead all of us attendees in singing and playing along with a wide variety of songs, encouraging participation through playing shaker and percussion instruments for anyone who didn’t bring their own instruments.

Let me tell you – the joy coming from this group of people is infectious.

The songs ranged from bluegrass standards to 60s hits, and the music making is inclusive of everyone. If you are a music lover, you will hear something you like, and you’ll be in good company to boot.

What to expect

When you arrive, you’ll sign in using the sheet on the front counter. A representative from the Alzheimer’s Association will be there to welcome you and may encourage you to grab a snack or pick up a shaker to use for the jam.

The room is set up with a small space in front for the leading musicians with a generous amount of chairs for attendees to sit in. Singing along and playing along are encouraged, so you can come ready to sing your heart out. Not feeling like singing today? It’s perfectly fine just to come listen and enjoy the company, too.

When: The 4th Thursday of the month, from 1-2 pm

Where: Alzheimer’s Association Education Center – 3856 W. 75th Street, Prairie Village, KS
